About this site

We believe you can't improve
what you can't measure.

Why this site exists

The EPA publishes detailed, high-quality greenhouse gas emission data. Climate scientists have developed rigorous methodologies for translating that data into meaningful footprint calculations. But most people never see any of it — it lives in dense Excel spreadsheets, technical guidance documents, and academic papers.

We built calculateyourcarbon.com to change that. Our goal is simple: make the EPA's best available data accessible to anyone with an internet connection, in a form that's fast, accurate, and genuinely useful for decision-making.

No sign-up required. No data saved. No apps to download. Just transparent math, real numbers, and honest context.

Our approach

Real data, not estimates

Every emission factor on this site traces to a primary source: EPA eGRID, the EPA GHG Emission Factors Hub, ICAO, or peer-reviewed research. We link to the source for every number. No proprietary black boxes.

Honest about limitations

All carbon footprint calculations are estimates. Diet data has ±30% uncertainty. eGRID averages mask sub-state variation. We document every assumption and limitation on our methodology page.

Focus on high-leverage choices

The evidence on which individual actions matter most is clear. We design our calculators and recommendations around that evidence — not around what's easiest to recommend or what makes people feel good.

No data collection

All calculations happen in your browser. We don't store, transmit, or sell your footprint data. We don't require an account. Your numbers are yours.

Methodology transparency

Every calculation formula, every emission factor, and every data source is documented on our methodology page. The calculation engine itself is unminified JavaScript in assets/js/calc-engine.js — open your browser's developer tools to read it directly.
